This course is part of the Master of Veterinary Public Health (MVPH) programme at Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. MVPH is a post-experience master programme dealing with control of contagious animal diseases and zoonoses, veterinary epidemiology and animal health economics. The full programme consists of 5 modules:

 

1. Data management, biostatistics and critical reading

2. Epidemiology and biostatistics

3. Disease control strategies

4. Animal health economics

5. Master’s project (thesis)

 

As part of module 3, Disease control strategies, we offer this:

Course on Disease Outbreak Management 2012

The goals of the course are to give a general knowledge of disease control and prevention, as well as competences to develop and implement methods and strategies for control, eradication and prevention of diseases in production animals – at all levels.

 

Participant profile

The programme primarily addresses persons working with control of animal diseases in

• veterinary services

• food processing industries for human consumption

• agricultural organisations (e.g. cattle, swine, poultry, fish, fur animals)

• pharmaceutical and chemical industries

• veterinary research institutions

 

Learning outcome

On completion of the course, the participants should have qualifications (knowledge, skills and competence) to:

• define and describe disease outbreak at the farm, regional, national and international level

• select and manage relevant disease control strategies

• investigate reported suspicions of diseases

• know the duties of both farmers and veterinarians

• collaborate scientifically, professionally and administratively with all parties involved

• perform and supervise disease control activities

• take responsibility and make decisions as veterinary practitioner or official veterinarian

Course structure

The course comprises two parts.

 

Part 1

is preparatory for Part 2 and is conducted electronically as distance learning, i.e. each course participant works from their home computer - interactively on individual topics and on topics in collaboration with other course participants and under the guidance of one or more teachers. The purpose is to bring all participants to a minimum level of knowledge about relevant elements for disease control. This part is conducted from March 19st till April 27nd, 2012.

 

Part 2

takes place at Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen as a one week long period during May 7nd –11th, 2012. This part builds on the topics of Part 1 with focus on integration and collaboration.

The learning process can be viewed as a matrix, where the focus of Part 1 is on specific topics and the focus of Part 2 is on integration, collaboration and implementation.

 

Scientific content of the course

 

Part 1 focus

after a short welcome session on learning activities within

• demographics of your country’s agricultural animal populations which are important for being able to manage disease outbreaks

• the veterinary system and relevant elements of the infrastructure in your country

• the present state of animal health and surveillance and monitoring of animal diseases in your country

• national and international veterinary legislation and organisation

• targeting, planning and collaboration between authorities responsible for the management of disease outbreaks

 

Part 2 focus

on learning activities within

• cooperation, coordination, management, decision making and line of command

• elements of epidemiology and risk analysis

• contingency plans, disease control strategies and planning of disease control programmes

• diagnostic procedures, autopsy, killing, disposal, cleaning and disinfection

• practical exercises including a herd visit, scenario exercises and simulation exercises

• reporting and
